This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
