Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative commented the attack made him speechless and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
